Craig Appleby became the 19th head coach in the 74-year history of the men's soccer program in July 2008 and promptly turned in one of the most successful seasons by a first-year head coach in program history. He guided the Blue Jays to a 13-5-5 record, the Centennial Conference title game and the NCAA Sweet 16 in his first campaign. His 13 wins are second only to John Haus, who guided Hopkins to a 14-3-1 record in his first season. Appleby is the only coach in Johns Hopkins and Centennial Conference men's soccer history to guide his team to the NCAA Tournament in his first season.

A 1994 graduate of UNC-Charlotte, Appleby played for the 49ers from 1990 to 1992. He earned Second Team All-Metro Conference honors in 1992 and helped lead UNC-Charlotte to back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances in 1991 and 1992. Appleby began his collegiate career at Wofford College, where he set a school freshman record with 16 goals and earned NSCAA First Team All-South honors.

Appleby continued his playing career in the German Third Division with Tus Celle. After a season in Germany, he returned to the United States to play in the USISL with the Raleigh Flyers (1995) and the National Champion Charleston Battery (1996). He then went on to play for the Richmond Kickers of the A-League (1997).

Named the South Carolina Player of the Year after leading the state in scoring in 1989, Appleby led Irmo High School to three consecutive state championships from 1987 to 1989.

Now in his 34th season as the head soccer coach at Washington and Lee is Rolf Piranian. Add to his coaching tenure his four years as a player at W&L, and it is easy to see that Piranian has had a huge impact on W&L's soccer program.

Piranian graduated from W&L in 1974 after a steller athletic career.  He was recognized for his contributions to the soccer program by being named to the All-State team as a junior and as a senior as well as earning All-South honors his senior season.

During his 32 seasons at W&L he has accomplished some impressive feats, and is responsible for some of W&L's best season's ever, including a record-setting 19-2 campaign in 2000. That season, the Generals won the ODAC Championship, advanced to the NCAA South Region Finals and finished the year with a final national ranking of eighth. Piranian has also led the Generals to some very successful seasons over the past 15 seasons, including a 12-6 campaign in 1996, 11-6 record in 1997, a 10-4-3 mark in 1998, a 12-3-2 record in 2006 and a 12-3-3 record in 2007.

Entering the 2009 season, Piranian is 271-216-38 (.552) over his 33 seasons as head coach. He has been named Old Dominion Athletic Conference Coach of the Year seven times, in 1977, 1979, 1980, 1986, 1989, 2000 and 2005. His 1986, 1989 and 2000 squads were ODAC champions.
